About the Philadelphia Detention Center
The detention center opened in 1963 and became the intake center for the Philadelphia Department of Prisons. It functioned as the male intake center until 1995, when it became the medical unit for all of the facilities. It has a total of 4 dorms where inmates are housed in an open type space with several beds and bunkbeds, three cellblocks where people are housed individually or in two, and a Prison Health Services Wing where there are 99 beds in a medical setting. Inmates here may still access and send mail, may still make phone calls, and are permitted to receive visitors if they are healthy enough to do so. Anyone who is or has recently been ill is requested to not attend visits at this facility to keep the population healthy. To plan a visit it is necessary to determine the visiting hours for the medical wing, and log in to visitpdp.org/app to schedule your time at least two full days before the visit, and it must be during the approved hours of 9-10am, 1-2pm,or 3-4pm Monday to Friday.
