A master plan was approved by the Orange County Board of Supervisors to expand this facility and house inmates in two different buildings: a 512 bed building and a 384 bed building. The funding that was approved allows for many more beds to come on board in the future, which has been opposed by the public in the Irvine community.
The facility was expanded in part in response to mental health needs and the aging population, where a significant number of inmates are age 50 and older.
The expanded buildings are located on land that had been farmland prior to construction. The produce from the land used to feed inmates, giving Orange County Jail - James A. Musick Facility the nickname, 'The Farm.'
