About the Grand Prairie Detention Center
  • The Detention Center is a part of the Investigative Services Bureau and can accommodate up to 210 inmates.
  • It consists of five cell blocks, four temporary holding blocks, and two special management cells.
  • Additionally, there are six separate cells specifically designed for short-term housing of juvenile offenders.
  • The center is staffed by one Detention Manager, four Detention Supervisors, eight Detention Team Leads, and a total of 28 full-time and six part-time Detention Officers.

Facility Operations:

  • The center functions as a holding facility, where prisoners are typically confined for less than 72 hours before being released or transferred to another facility.
  • It operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Note that the bond desk is unable to accept payments between 5 a.m.-6 a.m. and 5 p.m.-6 p.m.

Monetary Value and Phone Calls:

  • The City of Grand Prairie assigns a monetary value for time spent in the detention center related to City of Grand Prairie Class C misdemeanor tickets or warrants.
  • The credit is determined by a municipal judge in accordance with state regulations. Generally, prisoners receive $100 for every 24 hours spent in jail.
  • During the booking process, prisoners are allowed to make a free telephone call. Once the process is completed, they can make unlimited collect phone calls.
  • Prisoners also have the opportunity to make collect phone calls from inside the cell blocks.
  • Family members can purchase prepaid phone cards at a kiosk in the detention center lobby and deliver them to the Bond Desk.
  • Alternatively, friends and family can set up an Advance Connect prepaid account or Direct Bill account online at securustech.net or by calling 1-800-844-6591.

Visitation Information:

  • Visitation at the Detention Center typically occurs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. However, please note that visitation may be canceled without prior notice by the Detention Supervisor.
  • Visitation is limited to 10-15 minutes per inmate, with a maximum of two visitors allowed.
  • Visitors must dress appropriately, be at least 17 years old, present a valid driver's license or state-issued identification card, and have no outstanding arrest warrants.
  • Children under the age of 17 are not permitted to visit inmates, and they should not be left unattended in the Detention Center Lobby or in a vehicle while a parent or adult visits an inmate.

What is the Cost of a Remote Video Visit?
Costs vary and are subject to change, but generally visits range from $5.00 to $15.00 for a 15 to 30 minute online or on-site video visit.

How do you know if your Inmate will be available during the time you schedule?
The Securus system knows the times that Grand Prairie Detention Center inmates are available for remote video visits.
It will not allow you to schedule a visit with your inmate if they are not available or the video visitation kiosk(s) in the jail are booked already.
Once you schedule a visit with your inmate they will be notified of the date and time of the visit.

The Grand Prairie Detention Center allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office. They may also allow certain photo postcards as long as they have not been tampered with or contain images that may be considered to be obscene or violent in nature. It is best to only use blue or black ink. Always include your name and return address.

Envelopes

Newspapers
Newspapers may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher.

Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Grand Prairie Detention Center allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Grand Prairie Detention Center standards will be disposed of. 
Hard cover books will not be accepted by the jail due to their potential to be used as a weapon.
