About the Garland Detention Center

The Garland Detention Center operates as a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week facility designed for the temporary confinement of pre-trial individuals involved in the judicial process and those serving sentences assessed on misdemeanor Garland Municipal Court cases. The detention center prioritizes maximum security for pre-trial prisoners, who are presumed innocent but require a secure environment before their trial. However, if pre-trial prisoners cannot secure their release, they are held for only a minimal time before being transported to another detention facility.

With a capacity of 137 adult prisoners and a separate processing area for detained juveniles, the Garland Detention Center has consistently been one of the busiest jails in Dallas County, second only to the Dallas County Jail. Juveniles typically spend no more than six hours at the facility and are either released to a parent or guardian or transferred to a Dallas County Juvenile Department detention facility. As a holding facility, prisoners at the Garland Detention Center are generally confined for less than 72 hours before being transferred to another facility or released.

In terms of communication, prisoners have limited access to free telephone calls once the booking process is complete. They are not allowed incoming phone calls but may have the opportunity to make collect phone calls from inside their cell area. The detention center also has designated visitation times for family and friends of the prisoners. Regular visitation hours are on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. It is important to note that these visitation times are subject to change, and it is advisable to confirm the current schedule with the Garland Detention Center before planning a visit.
