Elmwood Women's Correctional Complex in Santa Clara County, California has approximately 500 inmate beds for women, and these inmates are overseen by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office and 91 staff members within the jail. All levels of security are provided here: medium-security protective custody inmates; high, medium, and maximum-security protective custody inmates; minimum-security inmates; and low medium-security inmates.

Since it was built in 1964, this is not a state-of-the-art faclity by any means. Inmates are divided by risk level. There are various forms of housing units: dorm style with indirect guard supervision; cells that are all in a line, where there is indrect supervision; cell housing with direct staff supervision, where there is more interaction between inmates and guards; and barracks-style housing with indirect supervision.

  • Visitors may bring in one car key, and if with infant – one diaper, a reasonable amount of wipes and one pre-mixed formula/white milk bottle per child. 
  • Don't wear jewelry, a bra with a metal wire, or any metal, as you have to pass through a metal detector.

Inmate at this jail can have newspaper subscriptions as long as they are mailed directly from the publisher and include all of the above required information.

Magazines

This jail allows inmates to receive magazine subscriptions that are mailed directly from the publisher to the jail. Magazines cannot contain nudity, pornography, obscenity or the promotion of drug use or violence.

Books

Books can be sent to inmates but must be soft-cover. In addition, they must come directly from the publisher, not a bookstore or a private party.

How Can I Communicate with an Inmate in the Elmwood Women's Correctional Complex using an Online Messaging Service?

Emailing and Texting Messages, Photos & Videograms

Elmwood Women's Correctional Complex contracts with GTL GettingOut, the same service that handles Inmate Phone Systems and Video Visitation, for sending secure messages and photos between you and your inmate.


If you are not already registered, do so here, or Log in.

Then use the Facility Finder to:
1.  Select Elmwood Women's Correctional Complex,
2. Add your inmate to your list of contacts,
3. Add a credit or debit card to cover your costs.

How Messaging Works
Watch this video on how to send a message.
1.
  Messages can be up to 500 characters long, including punctuation. At the bottom of your message there is a 'character countdown' feature.  
2. After you click the “CONTINUE” button, you can review the cost to send your message to your inmate. You can also attach credits for your inmate to reply to your message.  Be sure to accept the Terms and Conditions and click the “SEND” button for your message to be successfully delivered to your inmate.

How Uploading Photos Works
Watch this video on how to upload a photo.
1.
  Select the Photos Tab.
2. Select “Take New Photo” or “Upload New Photo”.
3. Take a new photo with your webcam, or select "Choose File" to upload a photo from your computer.
4. Give your photo a Title or add it to the "Gallery" of your choice.
5. Select the "Share" button.
6. Select your inmate(s) and then select "Share".
7. Once the photo is approved, it will be shared with your inmate(s).

How to Communicate with an Elmwood Women's Correctional Complex Inmate by Mail and by Email

To mail or email an inmate in Santa Clara County follow these steps:

When mailing a letter or postcard to an inmate, please follow these instructions:

  • All mail sent to an inmate at the Elmwood Women's Correctional Complex must include the sender's name and mailing address in the top left corner of the envelope or postcard.
  • All mail must include the facility's address, as well as the inmate's name and assigned number.
  • Failure to include your return address will most likely result in your mail NOT being delivered and your letter destroyed.
  • The Elmwood Women's Correctional Complex has a zero-tolerance policy regarding mail violations.

Do Inmates in the Elmwood Women's Correctional Complex have Access to Tablets or Computers?

Elmwood Women's Correctional Complex allows inmates access to tablets to use for the services provided by 'gettingout'.


The devices are similar to common handheld tablets, but are made exclusively by GettingOut, a GTL / Viapath company.
Tablets offer specialized content and services for inmates to use during their stay at Elmwood Women's Correctional Complex, such as:
