Within Kern County, California there are several facilities that serve the youth population and house young offenders for their rehabilitation. Each is targeted to assist in rehabilitation and development, offering the youth a better chance of success after their release. The Juvenile Crossroads Facility focuses on behavioral therapy, education, and has programs for work experience, physical education, and to work on group living. Students who leave this facility will be comfortable working and living with others, will see improvements in social interactions and develop new skills both in life and for employment purposes. Two custody options are offered within this program, and they are a 168 day or 252 day program, offering regular school and other classes. The Superintendent of Kern County Schools oversees the school program within the jail and they cover all of the classes and topics that the public school does to ensure that they keep up with their class. Mental health care is provided and several counselling sessions, classes, rehabilitation programs, parenting classes, life skills, etc. are offered. Each group of students is created based upon their assessment and behavioral expectations to create an environment for success and progress to be made. After completing week 8 and week 16 youth may attend a ward picnic with their parents on the Sunday from 11:15am to 12:15pm.
