Originally opened in 1938 as a work camp, the Erwin Own camp has 65 beds for young offenders between 14 and 18 yeas of age and operates as a forestry camp. The original aspects of teaching responsibility, strong work ethic, and discipline have been maintained throughout the years. Evidence based treatments and programs are offered for everything from vocational skills to counselling, substance abuse treatments, and trauma healing. There is a focus on mutual respect, positive behavior, and setting and achieving goals. The local high school provides academics to the facility and assists youth in obtaining credits needed for graduating and coaching on study skill. Mechanics courses, computer courses, and workshops are provided to help youth determine what career may be a good fit for them. Families and guardians are often involved where possible, benefiting the entire community. Interventions are offered for substance abuse, aggression, safety seeking, and crisis intervention along with personal, group, and family counselling. Community service options are available for youth to give back and support their community.
