Standing several stories tall in white and glass, the Hampden County Correctional Center has seven buildings and is referred to as the Main Institution, while the pre-trial center is the second location. The main institution has 24 housing units, is medium security, and provides many opportunities to learn new skills and advance their education to become productive members of their community after their release.
Upon their arrival after sentencing each inmate will begin their new routine, which includes 40 hours of work each week in the facility, providing an opportunity to be productive, learn skills, and give back to their own community within. These 40 hours are comprised of both educational opportunities and programs, and work tasks or chores that will help in the operation of the center.
Programs such as substance abuse, adult education and literacy, anger management, finding and keeping employment, victim awareness, GED, and several other programs that are partnered with time spent cleaning, doing laundry or other janitorial tasks, landscaping and maintenance. Orientation and screening procedures occur following intake, and they will provide all of the information on what to expect within the building, what to expect from the programing, and schedules and rules that must be followed.
The results of the screening will determine security measures, housing assignment, medical and mental health treatments that will be provided, and what other tasks or accommodations will be offered. Each of the programs that are chosen for participation will add to the one before it and the one after, creating a solid base for each inmate when they begin the reentry process and are seeking housing, employment, and rejoining their families.
Therapy and counseling are provided, with support groups and other services to address mental health throughout any length of incarceration. During their time here inmates may receive mail at:
