⇓ Learn more ⇓ Show lessThe Black Hawk County Jail was built in 1995 with a rated capacity of 272 beds, replacing the jail that used to be a part of the Black Hawk County Courthouse, which is still in use today. It was built in 1964. The jail and the courthouse are connected by a skyway, providing a secure passage for inmates moving back and forth for arraignments, hearings and trials.
The three-story brick, concrete and steel Black Hawk County Jail was built at a cost of approximately $15 million and is 113,800 square feet in size. The Black Hawk County Sheriff runs the jail and his department on a budget of $14 million a year. The jail itself has a staff of 68 correctional officers, 12 booking clerks, 2 commissary clerks and a social worker. They book about 6,000 people into the jail every year for crimes ranging from misdemeanors to serious felonies such as robbery, rape and murder. For added security the jail recently installed a full body scanner that every person entering the jail has to pass through.
The jail holds men and women that are arrested in Cedar Falls, Dunkerton, Elk Run Heights, Evansdale, Gilbertville, Hudson, Janesville, Jesup, La Porte City, Raymond, Waterloo and other incorporated ares of Black Hawk County.
