Iowa maintains their own state prison system, nine correctional facilities which consist of every security level; maximum, medium, and minimum, as well as eight Community Based Corrections Districts that act as an alternative to prison.
The Iowa Department of Corrections is where offenders are sent that have been convicted of felony crimes of murder, rape, assault, serious thefts and drug related offenses. These are offenses of at least one year, and all the way up to life imprisonment. Iowa abolished the death penalty in 1965, thus there is no death row.
