About the Coweta County Correctional Institution

The Coweta County Correctional Institution, also known as the Coweta County Prison, is located in Newnan, Coweta County, Georgia and has a capacity of around 210 inmates. The County Prison, not to be confused with the Coweta County Jail, houses only minimum (and some medium) security sentenced inmates that are under the jurisdiction of the Georgia Department of Corrections. They contract with the Coweta County Board of Commissioners to provide low-cost inmate labor to the county.

The Georgia Department of Corrections pays the county $22 per day per state offender. The inmates are sentenced for up to 12 months at the work release center. Only healthy offenders are housed at the prison due to the work requirement of each offender. Skilled and semi-skilled offenders are assigned to the Coweta County Road Department, Fleet Maintenance, and Environmental Management. It's a win-win for the county as they not only get free labor to do the public's work, but get paid for it.

The Coweta County Correctional Institution opened in 1977 and has a capacity to hold 210 state and county sentenced male offenders, although the county claims it has as many as 216 beds.

Inmates can be looked up online on the Georgia Department of Corrections Inmate Search. You can view their mugshot, criminal charges, date of birth, projected release date, case numbers and more.

The Coweta County Correctional Institution is unique in that it is located 184 feet below sea level, making it the lowest elevation of a prison.

Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly, however the jail uses a digital service to avoid contraband entering the facility. The original letter will be scanned and then destroyed. Friends and family of inmates in the Coweta County Correctional Institution can arrange to communicate using an online text/email system, send them money and buy them commissary online, and set up a phone account that allows the inmates to call them during the day and evening seven days a week.

All the information on these inmate services can be found in the sections below.  If you still have questions, you can phone the jail 24 hours a day by calling 770-254-3723.
