Georgia maintains their own state prison system, facilities which consists of every security level; maximum, medium, and minimum, as well as facilities that focus on county based work centers, sober living, and halfway houses that prepare inmates for life outside of prison.
The Georgia Department of Corrections is where offenders are sent that have been convicted of felony crimes of murder, rape, assault, serious thefts and drug related offenses. These are offenses of at least one year, and all the way up to life imprisonment. Georgia also has a death row with almost 40 murderers at any one time, waiting to be executed.
The Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice oversees 19 Regional Youth Detention Centers, 38 residential centers, and 6 Youth Development Campuses for juvenile offenders who have been convicted of serious crimes and sentenced to detention, or are there awaiting their court dates.
