⇓ Learn more ⇓ Show lessThe original building for the Montgomery Correctional Center was finished in 1958 and sits on a large piece of land that is over 620 acres. At that time, it had a building for male inmates, a building for female inmates, and it became a fully operational farm that was almost fully self sufficient and was commonly known as the farm.
Currently there are two main wings, the male wing and the female wing, both for inmates who are sentenced and serving that sentence. The North Unit now houses the male inmates who are either waiting for or serving their sentence, and the South Unit which houses only sentenced males, with the Annex housing 64, creating a total capacity of 776.
Many of the inmates who are in detention will be used on work crews, which allows them to leave during the day, gain employable skills and experience, and support their community with their work. Often work crews are assigned to areas where illegal dumping is happening, neighborhoods that are deteriorating and in need of support, or other spaces where the community has asked for help. Giving back to the community is one of the benefits of the program and improves their welcome when they are finished their sentence and return to the community full time. It also provides purpose for each day, as well as assist in lowering costs for the county in general.
Within Montgomery Correctional Center there are many units that function individually but contribute to the functions as a whole including the classification unit that determines work crews, housing assignments, and what work crew which inmate will be best suited for, the maintenance unit who care for the physical building, the industry unit provides sewing and repairs as well as silk screening to care for the textiles that are in use daily, as well as providing other items for the Department of Corrections, the food service unit which supplies the meals for the inmates, laundry service, medical and mental health services, and a commissary. An agriculture unit is still in place and they include the mechanics crew, landscaping and the plant nursery, as well as the metal shop.
