The new building will house up to 300 inmates, while the current building from 1996 has a capacity of only 112 inmates. Once those beds are taken inmates are sent to other locations to serve their sentences which removes them from their community and their support system, which makes it harder to have visits and contact with family and friends.
The Wood County Jail is also responsible for the home monitoring and GPS programs that function as alternatives to detention, permitting low risk and non-violent offenders to serve their sentences within their own homes while their location is tracked. Inmates may be supported by friends and family in many ways, including funding their commissary and other accounts, or their phone accounts to receive phone calls during the daytime hours.
Video visits, emails, and text messages are all provided through the tablet service, and video visits may occur during two time periods, 9am-12pm and 2pm-9pm.
