About the Western Virginia Regional Jail

Found in Salem City, the Western Virginia Regional Jail serves several counties and cities offering advanced, secure, and safe housing for inmates who are serving a sentence for either a felony or a misdemeanor. It serves the counties of Franklin, Montgomery, Roanoke, and the City of Salem.

The Western Virginia Regional Jail is a large building that covers over 265,000 square feet, can house up to 1023 inmates and allows for space to further increase capacity. When built, the most advanced technology was used for both the security systems as well as the communication and environmental features. For any concerns regarding an inmate or questions on their status or visits, the staff can be contacted at 540-378-3700, where they will also receive emergency messages only for inmates, and a database is maintained online.

Full programs are offered along with around the clock medical care, dental care, and mental health care. Contracts are in place to ensure that the overall health of inmates is addressed when necessary and counseling and re-entry programs help to prepare for life after incarceration.

The technology that is used within provides observation cameras around the facility and control of the doors and other functions, but also is used to benefit the inmates and to provide opportunities for communication with their friends and family.

Email is used for both pictures and letters, allowing loved ones to create accounts online, and inmates will receive them on their tablet.

Telephones are also available from 8:30am until 11pm, and they may call friends, family, attorneys, parole officers, and other representatives or contacts. Each of these calls will be collect, and those outside of incarceration can create an account online in order to provide money for these calls.

Visits are done through video and are accessible from Monday through Sunday 8:00am-11:00am, 2:00pm-5:00pm and 7:00pm-10:00pm through an online account.
