The Newport News Juvenile Detention Center provides a range of services to the youth in their care as well as to the surrounding community. There is educational programming, medical and mental health services, recreation, enrichment services, and while in the detention center you will have a safe and secure environment for their own person growth and development. Youth who are not required to be confined can access the work alternative program, can participate in the electronic monitoring program as an alternative to detention, use the outreach program to develop new skills and improve social skills, and participate in a youth empowerment program. Residential programs require youth to remain in the detention center and includes a post-dispositional program as well as secure detention. Meals that are provided are based upon the nutritional needs of the youth, and snacks are also provided. Laundry is done regularly, and the facility is cleaned daily, ensuring the physical health and safety of the youth. Medical staff provide all needed care, and mental health care is provided with counseling or therapy. Visitation: Only parents, guardians, and grandparents are permitted to visit residents, and they will be provided with 2 visits of 30 minutes each week. Those who are at level 4 will receive two 40 minute visits. Visits are determined by living pod, and it is key to check the schedule to confirm before planning a visit.
