To ease the transition into jail, or out of, for both the inmate and the family, there are many services and programs provided and a fully functional website that offers valuable information and insight to the family and friends of an inmate. Each inmate is provided with an account to hold their funds for the duration of their stay, and to assist in maintaining their access to phone calls, commissary purchases, and other services, this fund can be added to by loved ones who are not incarcerated. This can be done through a kiosk that is located in the lobby of the facility they are housed in, or it can be done online through jailatm.com.
There are also video terminals located in the lobby that provide an opportunity to visit with inmates in a manner that is no contact. This is operated through Securus Technologies and an account can be created at securustech.net. Once the visitor has created an account, they can connect to the inmate that they wish to visit, and once approved (anyone who has recently been released, is being charged in the same case, or is a victim of the offender will not be approved for visitation) you can schedule a visit. Video visits can also be conducted from home, and are available from 9am until 11pm each day of the week.
Inmates are expected to take part in the cleaning of the cells each day, as well as assisting with cleaning the common areas in the pod they reside. Some inmates may be permitted to work in the laundry room, the kitchen, the commissary, or even assisting with daily maintenance at the facility to gain new skills for employment opportunities upon their release. These opportunities are available to all inmates but may be removed for those who are being disciplined.

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.
Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Newport News City Jail uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.
Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the Newport News City Jail first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.
