Offenders who are arrested in Kent County will find that they are transported and housed in the Regional Jail East that is located within Henrico County Regional Jail. Opened on September 17 of 1996 this facility is a combined effort for three counties, Henrico, Goochland, and New Kent. It is considered a “new generation” jail and uses direct supervision to keep interactions between inmates and officers frequent and to create a more community feel that builds respect and courtesy between them. Staff work directly within the housing units and help to move them through the facility in person rather than solely observing from a control room.
There are several training opportunities and classes available including the opportunity to obtain a GED, learn automotive repair, prepare for cosmetology state boards, and many more. These are one of the ways that inmates can both fill their days and learn skills that will help them to be more employable in the future and prepare them for a successful reintegration into their community upon the completion of their sentence. When combined with the other facility and the courthouse security, the Sheriff’s Office has over 300 staff members that work for the corrections division and maintain the safety of their community.
Part of the operations of the jail include the supervision of their activities, including classes, recreation, meals, laundry and other tasks, and their phone calls and visits. GTL.net is the program that provides the phone services for inmates, and they will have access to phones daily, with an account at that site being created to provide funding for those phone calls. This ensures that inmates can call family or friends who have been approved to receive phone calls. To visit an inmate, an account is created at gettingout.com and then connecting to the inmate. This will provide a list of times they are available and allow a video visit to be scheduled. All visits will be monitored and can be ended at any time for any reason deemed necessary.
