Located in Christiansburg, VA, the Montgomery County Sheriff Office runs the local jail as well. As the responsibilities of the law enforcement officers cover a wide range of tasks including motor vehicle accidents, criminal investigation, civil processes, courtroom security, courthouse security, and corrections, there are several ways in which they protect the safety of the community.
The Montgomery County Jail is responsible not only for the safe incarceration of inmates but also for operating the HEM program, which allows qualified inmates to be sentenced to home arrest and tracking with an monitor rather than serving their sentence within the jail. The staff is first and foremost focused on maintaining a safe environment and ensuring the safety of both inmates and staff during their time in the facility. Built in 1988, this facility has been updated with better security and several programs are designed to help inmates to improve their skill and instil self-respect to provide a successful base for life after they have served their sentence.
Inmates are allowed to receive and respond to mail that is sent to them at the facility if it is delivered via US Postal Service and contains no contraband including publications banned by the US, personal cheques, and anything that affects the security of the jail. Inmates are also encouraged to have visits from their friends or family and can create a list of five people they wish to have visits from so that each can be approved before they book a visit. Each visit is 15 minutes long and inmates get one visit each week. The visiting times for female inmates are Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday from 7pm until 9pm, males are the same days but from 7pm until 9pm and protective custody and juveniles have visits on Saturdays from 2pm to 3pm.
Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly, however the jail uses a digital service to avoid contraband entering the facility.
