James River Juvenile Detention Center serves the surrounding community by offering a safe and secure environment for their juvenile offenders to remain as they await their court date, if they are sentenced to a term of detention and committed to the facility, or if they are waiting for a transfer to another location. While they are within the building, they will be required to follow a strict schedule and protocols including hygiene time in the morning, cleaning their space, school classes on weekdays, recreational time, physical education, arts or crafts, and rehabilitation programming. The space has 60 beds and houses both male and female young offenders, offering them the same services and programs but in an environment that keeps them separated throughout. Credits are earned by schoolwork and each assignment supports a student graduating and transfers to their home school. Medical and mental health care are provided in the facility and support the overall health and growth of each of the students.
