Piedmont Regional Juvenile Detention Center Information

The Piedmont Regional Juvenile Detention Center opened in 2001 and has 20 beds to securely detain youth who are aged 8-17. Full services are provided, and the schedule will need to be maintained including classes through Prince Edward County Schools that include all core subjects as well as P.E, health, and electives, daily recreation time for basketball, video games, or movies, and medical or mental health programs. A therapist offers mental health services through Crossroads Community Services and works with the youth both while they are within the facility and after they are released and return to their community. Each resident will meet with them weekly as a part of the group and will be assessed for further mental health needs including individual therapy. Students will work on cognitive and emotional skills, coping with challenges, and developing positive decision making and behaviors. Mental health staff, along with medical staff, are available around the clock either onsite or on call to meet the immediate needs of each of the residents. Electives that are available through the school programming, in addition to other programs, include job shadowing, character education, and assistance creating a career plan. Each student will receive a personalized schedule that meets their needs and helps to move them towards the career they want. Mail: P.O. Mail must be through the US Postal Service, and any items that are in the mail will be recorded as the mail is opened with a staff member present and valuables or collectibles will be placed in the juvenile's personal property until their release. Phones: One call to a parent or guardian is provided during the intake process and afterwards those who have positive behavior will receive one phone call each week that must be to a parent or guardian. These calls will occur on Saturday. Visitation: Only parents and guardians are approved for visits without additional authorization through the court, and no visitors will be approved if they are under 18 years old. Visiting hours will be Friday 6pm-8pm, Sunday 1pm-2:30pm and 3:15pm-4:30pm.
