In the future, a second phase will add another 426 beds. This modern facility replaced the county's Downtown jail, which was constructed in the 1960s. Notable features of the new facility include a detoxification unit, a mental health unit, a medical unit, and dedicated classroom space within each housing unit to provide comprehensive education and programming for inmates.
One distinctive aspect of the facility is its strategic inmate management approach, employing direct supervision. Deputies supervise inmates within the pods, allowing for free movement and interaction among the inmates. This design, developed in collaboration with the National Institute of Corrections, aims to reduce tension, violence, and vandalism while enhancing safety and job satisfaction for corrections officers. The facility also includes spaces for recreation, medical services, video visits, and a rapid resource center to support inmates and their families with transportation, job searches, and other essential services.
In terms of inmate communication and support, there are options available for contacting inmates through phone calls and video visitation services. The facility has partnered with ConnectNetwork to provide these services. Additionally, items can be sent to inmates through the secure packaging service offered by Access Securepak. It is important to note that there are limits on the number and value of items that can be ordered per week for each inmate, and orders are delivered to the facility on Wednesdays. In some cases, inmates may be restricted from receiving packages, but reinstatement of order privileges is possible by resolving any outstanding issues with the denied credit card transactions through Securepak's customer service.
