This jail has 4,563 beds, and an average of 3,500 inmates are held on a given day, both males and females. It is 1,000,000 square ft. in size, with roughly 960 staff officers working there. When arrestees enter the jail, they are checked in by a Booking Sargent who does an intake interview to check for gang affiliations, research criminal histories and other background information. Each inmate is classified and put into a unit that fits their classification. The jail tries to keep like people together in terms of non-violent vs. violent offenders and other classifications. Since inmates spend roughly 16 hours a day in common areas where they are interacting with fellow inmates, these classifications are supposed to make the jail safer.
