Housing the juvenile offenders who are over 10 years of age and under 21 years of age, the Abbeville County Juvenile Detention Center provides services to the county and surrounding counties as needed. Youth may remain past their 18th birthday only if they are adjudicated, arrested, or charged as a minor before they age out of the juvenile system. Newly arrested youth who are over 18 will be seen in the adult court rather than family court, where juveniles are referred to juvenile detention. Youth who are being detained for a court date, as part of their sentencing, or as they wait to be transferred, will be provided with healthy meals, regular education in the onsite classrooms, dental and medical care, and mental health support from professionals. Learning opportunities are provided for life skills and social skills, and both groups and individual activities are provided throughout the week. Counseling and group therapy is available, and students are expected to stay with their strict schedule, remain where they are expected to be at all times, and care for their personal space. Mail may be inspected to maintain the safety and security of the facility. All contacts must be approved, though parents, guardians, and legal represenation are allowed to receive calls. Incoming calls are not accepted. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Abbeville County Juvenile Detention Center allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
