About the Bedford Heights City Jail
Functioning as both a local detention center as well as an ICE facility, the Bedford Heights City jail houses those who are awaiting trial or who are being transferred. It houses only 34 people at one time. It is managed as a medium security jail in order to ensure that all staff and detainees are kept safe and protected from both outside threats as well as from other inmates. Nurses are kept on staff to care for all medical needs and ensure that all inmates receive the medication that they require. It is a sprawling building that covers a large amount of land and includes some outdoor space for recreation as well as indoor opportunities. Visitation, mail, and phone calls are all encouraged to maintain outside relationships and connections with loved ones. Anyone who has recently been released may be denied contact with those who remain incarcerated for the benefit of both parties and the safety of other inmates. This small detention center does not hold long term inmates or those who are serving life sentences, allowing these to be tranferred to larger facilities and those with maximum security sections. This facility does not have set visiting hours, and they are booked by contacting the jail and setting a time. Local visitors may have 30 minute visits once a week, anyone travelling more than 25 miles to reach the facility can requiest a 90 minute visit.

Newspapers

This jail will allow you to mail newspapers to inmates.

Magazines

Magazines are accepted, but must be mailed in. You can send used or new as long as they arrive through the mail the inmate. You cannot bring them to the jail for the inmate.

Books

You may bring softcover books to the jail to drop off for the inmate. You must have the inmate’s first and last name and ID number. Staff suggests a maximum of two books at a time. You are also welcome to mail books from home or go through an online vendor such as Amazon.com.

This jail does allow inmates to receive used books. Each book is examined for contraband and security risks before being given to the inmate.

Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Bedford Heights City Jail standards will be disposed of.
