Essex County Juvenile Detention Center Information

The Essex County Juvenile Detention Center located in Newark, NJ, serves both Essex and Passaic counties. It provides secure and safe temporary housing for juveniles who have been arrested or are awaiting a court date. All juveniles who are arrested will not be held, but those who are may be a safety risk for themselves or others, who may not arrive to their court date without detention, or who are being held for another county, will remain in the facility until their court date or transfer is complete. Health and safety is a main focus for all staff, with strict schedules and routines in place for both staff and students, to ensure that residents are where they are supposed to be at all times and that they can all be accounted for. School is held 5 days a week and students will be assigned tasks that are suitable to their grade level. Family support is also provided, alongside any counseling and additional programs that the residents attend. There are available learning opportunities for life skills and socialization, developing new social skills, Parents, guardians, and grandparents are encouraged to attend visiting hours and accept phone calls whenever possible to support their youth. The Essex County Juvenile Detention Center allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
