About the Essex County Correctional Facility

Within Essex County the main detention facility is the Essex County Correctional Facility and it houses all of the newly arrested individuals, male and female, from their original booking through to the end of any sentence they are provided with.

The facility is located in Newark, NJ, and offers many programs, communication opportunities, recreation activities, and supports to each of the inmates to assist in gaining new skills that will help build the remainder of their life. Addiction counseling and support groups are provided, along with anger management, life skills, money management, and other skill building opportunities. Educational opportunities are provided for basic adult education, ESL, and access to college classes for those who are interested.

Within Essex County Correctional Facility there are also alternative sentences including a weekend only program that allows those who are convicted of non-violent crimes to serve their sentence on the weekends only, and a Community Work Program that allows for qualified inmates to leave during the workday to attend their regular job and return in the evenings. These are some of the ways in which the jail remains under capacity, and it helps to reduce the number of people who remain in detention.

Focusing on rehabilitation and reintegration, opportunities are provided for volunteers to do tasks and do speaking within the facility as well as allowing inmates to do community service tasks that will benefit and give back to their community. By having them housed within their own communities they are better able to receive the support of friends and family by placing outgoing phone calls for those who register for an account online, or to access visitation online or in person by registering, checking visiting hours on the website, and onsite visits are available in Buildings 2 & 5, Wednesday & Saturday; 10:00 AM – 1 PM / 2:30 PM – 5:00 PM, Buildings 3 & 4 on Thursday & Sunday; 10:00 AM – 1 PM / 2:30 PM – 5:00 PM and for the Infirmary Friday; 10:00 AM – 1 PM / 2:30 PM – 5:00 PM.

All those who attend visits in person will need to pass through a metal detector and will not be admitted if the machine locates metal. Family who are concerned about an inmate or who have questions can contact staff at 973-274-7500, though they are unable to call inmates directly.
