With a capacity of 194 juveniles, the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility has recently been transferring some juveniles to other surrounding areas to relieve the overcrowding that it experienced. Staff are onsite around the clock, and they are able to monitor the youth from within the housing units, interacting with them daily. The facility and all of it’s residents and staff operate much like a small community with laundry and clothing services, food services that provide meals and snacks, classes that follow the local school classes allow students to conitnue with school during their detetnion, and there are opportunities each day for recreation. It is located in Detroit, and allows for those who are located in the city to be housed for their term at a local facility where family are able to visit more often. They will also receive all needed medical and dental care, including providing prescription medication on schedule every day. Other programs encourage positive decisions, improved social interactions, and practicing life skills to assist youth in a successful life outside of the facility.
