Douglas County Youth Services Information

The Douglas County Youth Services provides several services for juveniles throughout the region, including detention, day school, probation, pretrial supervision, diversion programs to prevent the need for detention, intake for juveniles, and supervision for the house arrest program. Each of these services are provided for not only the local cities but also the counties of Anderson, Brown, Chase, Coffey, Douglas, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Lyon, Miami, Nemaha, Osage, Pottawatomie, and Wabaunsee. On average the youth stay between one day and 90 days, with few having their stay extended by a judge due to the seriousness of their actions or the effect that they had on others. Up to 18 residents, male or female, can be housed at one time, with the male detainees and the female detainees being housed in separate units. Both residents and day school students, who are assigned by the court to attend school at the facility each day but they serve the remainder of their sentence at home, will earn credits towards their home school and their diploma, can access the GED program and tests, receive breakfast and lunch based upon the local school programs, and will have access to counselling, art instruction, and behavior supports as well as academics. Medical staff provide all medical care and drug testing is conducted on a random basis. Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Douglas County Youth Services allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Douglas County Youth Services standards will be disposed of. 
Hard cover books will not be accepted by the jail due to their potential to be used as a weapon.
