It is located at 3601 East 25th Street, Lawrence, Kansas 66046. You can reach 24 hours a day by calling 785-830-1000.
The reason they needed to expand the jail was because by the time they finished the first one they were already incarcerating as many as 50 more inmates than they had adequate space for. Because of that, Douglas County Correctional Facility had to outsource as many inmates as they could to surrounding counties. In short, it is very dangerous to be moving offenders, sometimes violent ones, around so much. Plus inmates housed elsewhere lose contact with family and their support system.
Douglas County Commission approved a $29 million jail expansion in 2020. The expansion built the colorful iconic tower on the 186-bed jail, adding another 112 beds, bringing the total to its current 298 beds.
The design is based on a direct supervision pod concept, developed to allow the largest number of inmates to be directly supervised with the fewest staff possible. The visitation system allows visitors access the non-contact visitation areas of the pods without need for an officer escort. With the new upgrade, work release inmates are housed on the first floor apart from the secure area. This keeps themfrom bringing in drugs and selling it to other inmates. Minimum security housing will also house transitional housing for male and females inmates on the final part of their sentences. The facility even has a day center will provide space to house administrative programs such as substance abuse counseling, and employment programming.
Douglas County Correctional Facility has video visitation, works with a 3rd party phone provider, and allows family and friends to deposit money online. You can look up booking and inmate information online, but the Douglas County Correctional Facility requires you register an account with them, so they know who is looking.
Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly. Friends and family of inmates in the Douglas County Correctional Facility can arrange to visit inmates by video, both at the jail and remotely from home. They can also send them money and buy them commissary online, and set up a phone account that allows the inmates to call them during the day and evening seven days a week.
All the information on these inmate services can be found in the sections below. If you still have questions, you can phone the jail 24 hours a day by calling 785-830-1000.
