To meet these goals, the Southwest Iowa Juvenile Detention Center offers both of these services to the communities around them and focus on rehabilitation for each of the residents rather than punishment. The facility is designed to appear similar to a school environment to assist in creating a positive environment for personal growth. There is a strong focus on teaching discipline through routine and structure, responsibility through consequences and rewards systems that allow juveniles to earn additional privileges, and to maintain the academic education through regular classes that mirror public schools in the area. Life skills and social skills are encouraged and displayed, as well as additional learning opportunities such as parenting, anger management, financial management, and other programs. Families are regularly updated on the progress their youth is making, and they are encouraged to accept phone calls and to visit as often as possible.
