About the Marion County Adult Detention Center

The Marion County Adult Detention Center has a top capacity of 3,039 inmates and has a full medical unit along with medical and mental health housing, a clinic, and an infirmary. The medical facility is three units with 8 beds in each along with 4 isolation rooms that are negative pressure, and provides additional services that are generally provided in a hospital including dialysis, radiology, physical therapy, dental, pharmacy, full lab, specialty clinic, hospital administration and support areas.

The jail consists of a few buildings that cover more than a square city block, and it is located on the outskirts of the city. The stark concrete brick and thin windows represent some of the cells in a recognizable design. Along with the medical housing, there is a full booking area with both individual and group holding cells, court holding cells for those who are attending court that day, both group and individual, transfer cells for those who are leaving the facility for another, juvenile housing and dayrooms, plus the functional spaces for the full kitchen, the laundry, and other necessary spaces.

Educational programs are in place to encourage all residents to grow their knowledge base and to prepare them for ongoing education or employment outside of Marion County Adult Detention Center, including basic adult education, GED, anger and stress management, money management, and many more.

Inmates are encouraged to stay in contact with their outside support system through mail, phone calls, and visits, however the transition to a tablet system has ended the arrival of books, magazines, and other media via mail and instead they will access these things on their tablet.
