Serving the counties of Benewah, Boundary, The Coeur d’Alene Tribe, Kootenai, Latah, and Shoshone, the facility offers direct supervision to young offenders that are determined to require detention for either their own safety or the safety of the community. Not only offering detention services, while the youth are in residence, they are encouraged to develop social skills and appropriate behaviors and choices, interpersonal skills, and offer programs to support these. Some of the interpersonal development skills are anger management, religious or faith based programs, life skills, and physical education. It is a maximum security facility but offers frequent interactions with staff throughout the day, and many opportunities to practice social skills and decision making. A level system is used to encourage the required behavior, with students earning more phone time, increased responsibility, and increased responsibility. Two full time teachers ensure that students continue to work on their high school education throughout their detention. Mail: (Name of Juvenile) c/o Juvenile Detention Center P.O. Visitation: Parents, grandparents, and guardians may visit each week but must book a visit in advance with the facility at (208) 446-1900. Visits occur on Saturdays and Sundays only.

Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Kootenai County Juvenile Detention Center allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Kootenai County Juvenile Detention Center standards will be disposed of. 
Hard cover books will not be accepted by the jail due to their potential to be used as a weapon.
