However, as of January 2023, the jail was still housing more inmates than its current capacity, with a total of 457 inmates in custody. It is still in much better shape than it was before the recent (January 2023) $11.4 million, 32,100 square foot expansion that added 124 new beds, plus another 8,500 square feet of unfinished space to hold 108 beds, if needed. This is the third jail expansion in 31 years.
For many years the Kootenai County Sheriff was forced to keep over 100 inmates at five different county jails across idaho and Washington. This was a huge time factor moving them around, not to mention logistics and security issue, and just moving the inmates from jail to jail cost the county approximately $1.3 million every year.

The Kootenai County Jail in Idaho has visiting hours that start at 7 a.m. and the last visit starts at 9:30 p.m. No visits occur between 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Each inmate is allowed two 30-minute visits per week on site, but an unlimited number remotely. Types of Phone Calls
Collect Calls
Collect calls allow you to accept and pay for calls to your land line (only) phone account. This means that if you accept your call from your inmate, all the charges for that call will then be billed to your land line phone account and will show up and be listed on your next local phone bill. Additional fees, costs, restrictions may apply.
Prepaid calls (Direct Calls)
With Prepaid Calls you can set up your account so that the inmate can only call you and/or you can just deposit money in their account and they can purchase prepaid phone cards through their commissary and call whoever they choose, provided the Kootenai County Jail approves of the phone number.
Quick Connect
Quick connect is an alternative to collect calls. It allows you to quickly pay for a phone call with your credit card. When your inmate calls you, follow the instructions from the automated voice system to pay for that one phone call, directly billed to your card.
