Serving several counties for youth who are in the grades 6 through 11, the Claxton Regional Youth Detention Center houses up to 30 juveniles. The counties and communities that access this facility include Appling, Bryan, Bulloch, Candler, Effingham, Emanuel, Evans, Liberty, Long, Tattnall, Toombs, and Wayne. Though there are at the facility for a short term basis, there are still full services provided including not only balanced meals, exercise or physical education, and laundry services, but also full educational services with classes running each weekday, computer and finances classes, therapy and behavioral therapy, and counseling or other assistance as needed. Medical and dental care are both provided to support the health of each of the residents, and they are encouraged to work on their life skills and their social skills. The goal of the provided programs is to help the youth to create comfortable and healthy lives outside of the facility. For those who complete their GED in the facility, college classes are available and vocational training may be provided. Contact is maintained with their family and friends outside of the center to keep a positive environment as much as possible and to assist in keeping a support system for after their release.
