The jail's purpose is to provide a clean and safe environment for detainees. The Lowndes County Jail in Georgia has been criticized for its aging facility and poor conditions. The jail has a team that investigates incidents that occur within the jail. The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office is responsible for the jail. The Lowndes County Jail in Georgia is the largest prison facility in the county, located on two acres of land in Valdosta. It is run by the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office, whose primary purpose is to maintain social order within prescribed ethical and constitutional limits. The jail has an aging facility which poses safety hazards such as nonstop running water and old toothpaste tubes stuffed into shower heads. The jail also has an Annex which provides outside work details to the community.

The original facility was built in 1956. An addition was built and opened in 2010 that added 512 beds to the jail, a new medical facility, administrative offices, and a kitchen. The new 512 beds are broken down into a two-level housing pod with 256 beds in each pod, a video visitation building, central control area, and  juvenile intake space. The newer facility has 32 inmates per cell, and each cell has eight rooms with two bunk beds. The new addition, totalling 77,000 square feet, cost the the county $18 million to build.

Mail in the form of postcards ONLY can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly, however the jail uses an online digital service also so mail doesn't have to enter the facility. Friends and family of inmates in the Lowndes County Jail can arrange to visit inmates by video, both at the jail and remotely from home. Photograph Policies

  • No Polaroid photos allowed.
  • Up to four photographs may be mailed to the jail, after an inmate has been incarcerated for a minimum of 30 days, provided the envelope is clearly marked PHOTOGRAPHS. There may not be any other thing in the envelope except for pictures. Every 90 days four more photos may be sent to the inmate.
  • Photos may NOT be larger than 4 inches by 6 inches.
  • The inmate name, ID number and dorm number must be written on the back of the photograph, in ink ONLY. Nothing else is to be written on the photographs.
  • Photographs must be unaltered, they may NOT contain any adhesives, such as stickers or labels.
  • Photographs must not depict sexual activity, visibly exposed breast/cleavage, private area or buttocks. Everyone in the photograph(s) must be fully clothed.
  • Photographs containing gang signs, codes, or promoting/showing illegal activity are NOT allowed.
  • Envelopes containing additional inmate correspondence will be returned to the sender.
