Housing youth from 18 different counties and cities, the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center offers a range of programs to each of the residents. The counties are: Forsyth County, Banks County, Barrow County, Clarke County, Dawson County, Franklin County, Gwinnett County, Habersham County, Hall County, Hart County, Jackson County, Lumpkin County, Oconee County, Rabun County, Stephens County, Towns County, Union County, and White County.
Staff maintain a focus on rehabilitation and treatment, while promoting a positive environment and positive interactions among the residents as well as the staff. Security and safety are key factors as the youth are being held to protect themselves or others, while they wait for their first court date or for their sentence to be determined.
As a short term facility there are no long sentences being served at the location, and they are transferred to a nearby long term facility or other housing options. Counseling and addictions treatment are both provided as well as opportunities for recreation, group activities, and learning to manage finances and education.
Regular curriculum is coordinated with the local schools and classrooms permit classes to continue Monday to Friday.
