Having contact with family and friends has been seen as one of the ways to maintain the mental health of inmates during incarceration so in addition to mail, inmates are able to make outgoing phone calls if their account is funded, and visits are available also. Visits are permitted every day from 7:30am to 1030am, again from12pm to 4pm and after supper from 5pm until 10:30pm, with no calls being made during meal times or lock down hours. 

Visits must be booked in advance through the visitation link, it must be done at least 24 hours in advance, and all paperwork is to be completed by at least 6pm the day before the visit.

Additionally, inmates will receive mental health support by way of counseling, support groups, and treatments as needed, with addictions and anger management or emotional regulation concerns being addressed. Medical care is available 24/7 and both emergency care and illness as well as ongoing care are provided onsite.

Programs are in place to ensure that inmates have access to education, to gain new life skills, practice their social skills with other inmates and with the staff, and they engage in programs that reduce recidivism and promote a safe and healthy return to their community.

Postcards
The Polk County South Jail allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office. They may also allow certain photo postcards as long as they have not been tampered with or contain images that may be considered to be obscene or violent in nature.

Newspapers
Local or national newspapers may also be mailed to the inmate as long as they are mailed directly from the newspaper publisher.

Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Polk County South Jail allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address above.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Polk County South Jail standards will be disposed of. No more than three books may be shipped at any one time.
Hard cover books will not be accepted by the jail due to their potential to be used as a weapon.
