About the Orange County Main Facility Jail

Orange County, Florida, has a large complex that holds several detention facilities, each providing a specialized service. As the original jail, the Main Facility runs along the back of the complex against Lake Catherine and is bordered by Horizon, Whitcomb, and the Female Detention Center. It has the largest capacity with several wings, housing pods, and space for federal inmates as well, housing up to 1,053 inmates at any time.

Inmates who are sent to this facility will first be booked through the Booking and Release Center, which is also where they will be processed for release, and where they will remain until their first court date and further housing assignment.

Direct supervision is the main form of security at the facility and this has detention officers in the pods with the inmates throughout the day, rather than just cameras from a command center. This improves relationships and is proven to create a more supportive environment with fewer violent incidents and other difficulties, making the facility safer than other methods.

Upon assessment, each will be permitted to choose programs or educational opportunities that will fit their needs and help them to reach their own personal goals, learn new skills and strategies, improve decision making, and prepare them for the future as well as reduce recidivism for the community. Many programs are available from high school classes and basic adult education to construction courses from the local community college, parenting and money management classes, treating trauma and cognitive behavioral programs are in place for those who wish to access them.

Faith based programs and services are provided for those who choose to attend, providing continuation of their ongoing faith which for many will support improved mental health. Veteran’s programs are in place to support those with share experiences in a way that will work best for them, and allow them to support each other.

Along with the support of others who are inside the facility, research shows that having a support system and family ties outside of detention improve rates of recidivism so there are systems in place to encourage maintained contact throughout incarceration. Mail is accepted through the postal service and must be a plain white envelope with no additional markings or decorations, the correct mailing address to:
