This facility is over 60 years old and has been plagued with structural problems and unsanitary conditions and has even drawn the attention of the federal government whereby a Department of Justice federal consent decree mandated reforms to the physical plant.

In additition, an overwhelming number of inmates have had mental health problems that have not been addressed. Illegal substances regularly enter the facility and have even gone as far as to make guards and inmates sick from substances such as Y 2 K, a synthetic marijuana.

All of these problems have prompted plans for a new facility replacing Miami-Dade Pre-Trial Detention Center. Although taxpayers have offered objections to spending on a new facility, the plans have moved forward out of necessity and it will be located northwest of Miami International Airport.
