Dixie County is part of a group of counties that combine their finances and efforts to use a regional facility. This particular facility, Alachua Regional Detention Center, is accessible to the counties of Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Lafayette, Levy, Suwannee, and Union. This allows for each of the counties to have a safe and secure facility to house juvenile offenders without having the full responsibility of their own facility. As each of these counties require only a few beds, they are easily able to share this 45 bed facility. During the average stay of 11 days each youth will attend regular school classes, perform hygiene tasks, eat healthy meals, participate in additional programs to address any mental health or addictions issues, and develop life skills. Mail: Time to read and write letters is provided, along with postage for 2 letters each week, with additional postage being provided by the families. Mail is checked for contraband and may be censored or denied based upon its contents. All mail must be addressed to the detainee at 3440 NE 39th Avenue, Gainesville, FL 32609 Phones: Outgoing phone calls are encouraged during free recreational time, which usually occurs in the evening after school and programming has been completed for the day. Youth are permitted to call adults in their immediate family including parents and legal guardians. Visiting: For visiting purposes, parents, grandparents, and legal guardians are the only approved visitors unless special permission is granted for others. Visiting hours are provided on Thursdays from 7:30pm to 8:30pm and again on both Saturday and Sunday 1:30pm to 2:30pm.
