About the Washington DC Central Detention Facility

Housing male offenders, the Washington DC Central Detention Facility has been rated for a top capacity of 2,164. It was opened in 1976, and has been operational since, under the supervision of the DC Department of Corrections. It stands several stories high and towers over the entrance with several distinct housing units.

Anyone seeking information on the presence of a family member or visiting information can contact the main office at 202-523-7060, and updates on any of the residents or other offenders can be found on the VINE program.

Incoming calls are not available for residents, but they are able to access phones in the common areas to make outgoing calls to their friends or family members.

There are also visiting hours provided at the Video Visitation Center which serves both the Washington DC Central Detention Facility and the Correctional Treatment Facility, with visiting hours being Wednesday through Sunday 11am until 10pm, with each resident getting two visits of 45 minutes each week. Visits must be scheduled online or by calling 888-906-6394 during business hours Tuesday through Saturday.

All medical care is provided through a contract with the community health provider, and each intake includes a medical assessment to ensure that all medical needs are met. Mental health care is also provided, with both group and individual counseling, and other care as necessary.

All video visits are held at the following locations:

    Visits are held Wednesdays through Sundays starting at 11 am and ending at 10 pm. The last session begins at 9 pm.
  • Anacostia Library, 1800 Good Hope Rd SE, Washington, DC 20020 – Visits are conducted on Thursdays and Fridays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
  • Capitol View Neighborhood Library, 5001 Central Ave SE, Washington, DC 20019 - Visits are conducted on Wednesday and Saturdays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

  • Visits may be scheduled via the Internet or by calling 888-906-6394 or 202-442-6155 (Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am-5 pm).
