About the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution

Located in Gander Hill, this facility is known locally as the Gender Hill Prison, but is officially the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.

As a level 5 facility it has been expanded from the original 360 detainees in the West Wing, to the current capacity of 1500.

Within Howard R. Young Correctional Institution many of the residents will be able to access the Road to Recovery Program which has a focus on treatment and rehabilitation of substance abuse and addictions concerns. They are able to also engage in programs that help to heal recovery, to address domestic violence, and healthy relationships. Residents in the R2R program will be 4-6 months, 6-9 months, or 9-12 months before they meet their set milestones and finish the program.

Medical and mental health care is also provided by the medical staff and contracts in the community, allowing professional care to be available around the clock. All meals are healthy and balanced, with three meals each day, and medication is handed out as described on the prescription.

Educational programs will also provide an opportunity for all residents to finish their high school education, learn new life skills, and to develop their social skills during class engagement or recreational activities which are provided daily.
