Youth Services in San Mateo County is a range of programs and services that are offered for young offenders and their families. This includes home supervision, probation services, treatment options, and a juvenile hall. The juvenile hall has common areas with seating, visiting areas, and individual cells for each young offender housed there. A full track surrounds a basketball court and additional outdoor activities, and physical education opportunities are present. The dental area provides full dental care and services, while the medical center provides all medical care. Therapy and mental health services are available and school programs run each weekday throughout the year. There are seven separate living units, a full kitchen providing healthy meals, a dining room for youth to eat meals together, and it has a capacity of 180 young people. There are five main programs that teach legal, social, and individual consequences, mind body awareness, life skills such as computer skills and drivers licenses, as well as college courses, and Olympics to provide an outlet and positive experiences during school breaks. Mail: Mail is permitted both to be sent from and received to the facility if it follows all rules and does not contain contraband. Mail may not be sent or received from anyone who is housed in another facility or who is on probation, or those who have a restraining or protection order regarding the youth. Phones: During free time there is access to phones to call preapproved phone numbers, most often parents and guardians. Visitation: Visitation is encouraged to work on family reunification and ensure that the young offenders will ahve the support of their families when they are released.
