With a maximum of 114 beds for 114 youth offenders, the Monterey County Juvenile Hall is also known as the Wellington M. Smith Jr. Juvenile Hall. There are three ways in which a youth will find themselves housed here, including waiting for the results of further investigation, waiting for their court procedures, or waiting to be placed somewhere else. Probation violations are housed at this location, as well as those who are newly arrested. Each member of staff is focused on safety and security, as well as creating an environment where youth can grow and develop new life skills and other skills. Staff includes behavioral health staff, nursing staff, and teachers that provide medical and mental health services as well as continuing education, with a focus on helping these youth to reintegrate back into their community. All of the programs and care provided create an opporutnity for each individual to grow both as an individual as well as a member of their community, and they are encouraged to develop good decision making skills and to engage in positive behaviors.
