With the combination of dormitory housing, single cells, and double cells, there is space for 1100 inmates at any one time. Inmates may be sentenced or waiting for their sentence, male or female, be on a work crew or undergoing treatment for substance abuse, and all inmates will have access to the treatments they need and recreational opportunities.
Work crews may work in the kitchen, do cleaning of the building and common areas, laundry, and maintenance, while others may work outside doing ground keeping, litter pick up, highway clean up, and other tasks. Credit is earned for doing work tasks, and it helps inmates to have a purpose each day and feel productive while also gaining vocational skills.
Once sentenced, inmates are able to join work crews and access several other programs for educational purposes, vocational training, library services, drug and alcohol programs, parenting classes, and religious programming.
Units include the classification unit which determines housing and programming, the medical unit where all inmates will receive the necessary medical care, and the welfare section that helps to provide a good start to inmates upon their reentry to the community.

Phones are funded online to allow inmates to call their friends and family, and they are permitted to have visits that are planned in advance on their approved visiting day. Types of Phone Calls
Collect Calls
Collect calls allow you to accept and pay for calls to your land line (only) phone account. This means that if you accept your call from your inmate, all the charges for that call will then be billed to your land line phone account and will show up and be listed on your next local phone bill. Additional fees, costs, restrictions may apply.
Prepaid calls (Direct Calls)
With Prepaid Calls you can set up your account so that the inmate can only call you and/or you can just deposit money in their account and they can purchase prepaid phone cards through their commissary and call whoever they choose, provided the Monterey County Jail approves of the phone number.
Quick Connect
Quick connect is an alternative to collect calls. It allows you to quickly pay for a phone call with your credit card. When your inmate calls you, follow the instructions from the automated voice system to pay for that one phone call, directly billed to your card.
