The jail opened in 1994 and maintains its position as the largest county detention facility in Arkansas. On any given day, the Pulaski County Detention Facility houses well over 1,200 inmates, but is capable of holding up to 1,530 offenders, and if the need should arise, even more. The facility takes in and classifies over 125 inmates daily. Some are released right away, but most are housed until they have a chance to go before a judge.
The Pulaski County Detention Facility holds inmates that are arrested in twelve different law enforcement agencies and they represent thirty-three state and local courts jurisdictions, which requires the staff to make sure that offenders get to their court appearances and back again every day.
Staff of the jail, those with direct contact with inmates, receive approximately 35 hours of intensive training every year, while even the civilian workers receive at least 16 hours every year.
