Racine County Juvenile Detention Center Information

With a top capacity of 121 juveniles, the Racine County Juvenile Detention Center offers short term detention for youth who are determined to require detention for one of a few reasons. Youth are detained only if they are determined to be an immediate danger to themselves or others, if they are waiting for a court date and have a hisotry of not attending court dates, or if they are assigned to the facility at their sentencing for rehabilitation efforts. Basic care is provided in the form of housing, clean clothing, three healthy meals each day, time and products to care for personal hygiene, books to read and supplies to write letters, medical care as needed, and mental health care. In addition, there is recreational time each day and physical education is provided. Teachers provide lessons each day to maintain schooling, following the plan that is in place in the home school of each of the students, providing personalized programming. For those not requiring detention the Alternatives to Corrections through Education program offers an alternative to students 12-17 to access services in their community rather than detention centers. Mail: Each detainee is permitted to receive unlimited letters each week and may send responses, with each piece of mail being checked for contraband and no communication permitted between detention facilities.
