Portage County Juvenile Detention Center Information

Accepting youth from 10 to 16 years of age, the Portage County Juvenile Detention Center is one of only 13 youth facilities in the state. Several of the state facilities have been closed and new ones are being built that will be smaller and serve their immediate community only. The Portage facility has a capacity of only 14 and accepts both male and female juveniles. During detention staff are onsite around the clock and maintain the safety and the security in the facility, while you are provided with educational services from a full time teacher. Physical fitness and recreation are both provided, along with programs to provide coping skills and others to develop life skills. A canteen is available, and youth can have an account funded by their family to allow them to make canteen purchases with many items being $1. Programs are designed to address poor decision making, anger management and emotional regulation, and both medical and mental health care are available at any time to support health. Mail: All mail must be correctly addressed with a full return address through the postal service and will be checked for contraband. There is no limit to the number of letters that they may receive each week. Telephone: Youth are permitted to make outgoing calls to their immediate family during their free hours but are unable to receive incoming calls. Visitation: Immediate family may schedule visits by calling 715-346-1263, with all visits occurring daily from 2pm to 4:30pm and 6pm to 8:30pm.
