The first Outagamie County jail was built in April of 1854, the story goes that Appleton's first paddy wagon was a wheelbarrow, used mostly to wheel drunks off to jail. It has come a long way since then.
The current Outagamie County Jail itself is a white, concrete structure, seven stories high. It was built in 1992. The operational design concept of the jail is to receive unclassified individuals and hold pretrial and convicted persons for up to a year. The jail's housing units include classifications of maximum custody, medium custody, minimum custody, protective custody, and special management. Each unit has a safety vestibule, which allows inmates to enter from the security of the main corridor into the housing unit.
The Outagamie County Jail has a diverse population with both male and female adults, Huber Law/work release inmates, and contract prisoners from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. The jail ranks 7th largest in Wisconsin in prisoner capacity.
